The College Eight Student Life program is currently seeking applicants for next year’s Resident Assistants and Programs Assistants!

 


RESIDENT ASSISTANTS (RAs) are student leaders employed by the college on a live-in basis. RAs serve in a unique position as peer leaders in the college apartments and residence halls. RAs help residents adjust to the college environment, and promote the development of a safe, positive, and supportive community for our students. 



 

Typical Activities of a Resident Assistant:

RAs work an average of 20 hours each week and serve an assigned area within their quad or cluster and are directly responsible for providing services and programming to meet the needs of the students in their area. These include planning educational, diversity and social activities for residents; advising and referring residents with academic and personal concerns; promoting an academic environment; role modeling and enforcing college and university policies; participating in spring quarter and pre-fall training; attending weekly staff meetings.



 

Minimum Qualifications - Successful RA candidates must:

Be motivated and enthusiastic about work with students.
 Have a genuine interest in developing positive student communities.
 Possess assertive leadership skills and good judgment. 
Have the ability to work well in a team.
 Be easily approachable, friendly, open, and attentive.
 Be able to commit to the position for the full academic year and complete spring and pre-fall training requirements.
 Complete a Spring Peer Leadership course (CLEI 28)
Be a College Eight affiliated student in good academic and judicial standing and pass a criminal background check including fingerprinting after selection. Must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative and quarterly GPA.

Benefits of the RA Position: Single room in the assigned residence hall or apartment and meal plan (combined value of room and meal plan is estimated at $13,000.) PROGRAMS ASSISTANTS: PAs are student leaders employed by the college on an hourly paid basis. PAs serve in a unique position as peer leaders in the college community. PAs help promote the development of a safe, positive, and supportive community for our students and College Eight community members through hosting various social, educational, environmental and social Justice programs and events. 



 

Typical Activities of a Programs Assistant:

PAs are expected to work approximately 2 to 6 hours per week during the academic year, when classes are in session, and up to 20 hours per week during breaks as directed by College Eight professional staff. PAs are responsible for creating, supporting, implementing and promoting educational and/or social activities and events that contribute to the positive development of community at College Eight.

 PA duties include planning, promoting and implementing educational, environmental, diversity and social activities/events for residents and College Eight community members; promoting an academic environment; role modeling and promoting leadership development; participating in the set-up, breakdown, clean-up of events and programs sponsored by the Programs Office including, but not limited to, College Nights, Café Nights, Earth Day, etc.; assisting with the development of and/or work campus-wide and College Eight events such as Welcome Week Orientation, Commencement, Campus Days, Earth Summit, etc.; participating in spring quarter and pre-fall training and attending weekly staff meetings.

 



Minimum Qualifications - Successful PA candidates must:

Be motivated and enthusiastic about working with students and for the College Eight community. 
Have a genuine interest in developing a positive College Eight community. 
Have or be willing to acquire knowledge of community development, the College Eight theme, Social Justice and diversity issues, and be able to apply these to student life programming efforts
. Possess strong organizational skills
. Demonstrate understanding of and commitment to the College Eight theme 
Demonstrate ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment. 
Show proven ability to use authority with discretion and accept responsibility of serving a student employee of the college. 
Have effective communication skills in order to successfully approach people, work with others in a team, and resolve problems. 
Be able and willing to commit to the position for the full academic year and complete spring and pre-fall training requirements. 
Be in good academic and judicial/conduct standing. Must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative and quarterly GPA.

Develop and acquire useful professional and leadership skills. This is an hourly position with a compensation of $ 8.50/Hr. Academic credit for the leadership class taught in spring quarter. In depth training and valuable work experience. Opportunity to apply creative abilities to a dynamic working environment.

Application materials are available in the College Eight Housing Office in B/L. Recommendations for RA and PA candidates may be submitted online. This online recommendation form is now available. You can find the link to this form in the application materials.



 

Application Process:

 

Applications for Resident Assistant (RA) and Programs Assistant (PA) positions are due by 4 p.m. on Friday, January 21st. Applications will be reviewed and a limited number of candidates will be invited to participate in a group interview process.



 

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a group interview and team dynamics process, which will be held on Saturday, January 29th, between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Following the group process, a select number of candidates will be invited to a final interview.



 

Complete applications must include a resume and supplemental essays. Two recommendations are also required. All applicants must submit to a check of academic standing, and student judicial conduct records.

 

Students selected to become RAs must also complete fingerprinting and a criminal background check. 

Additionally, all candidates will need to attend/participate in two College Eight Student Life sponsored programs/events by Saturday, January 30th.
